Artificial intelligence is changing how work is done across Africa, but the biggest opportunity may not be replacing people. It may be helping ordinary workers become more productive.
From customer service and software development to marketing, research, finance and creative work, AI tools are already allowing individuals and small businesses to accomplish tasks that once required larger teams.
For African economies, this distinction matters. The continent has a young and growing workforce, and the goal should not simply be to automate jobs out of existence. The bigger opportunity is to give more people access to tools that increase their skills, productivity and earning potential.
That will require more than access to AI applications. Reliable electricity, affordable internet, digital skills and practical AI education will determine who benefits from the technology.
Africa’s AI future should therefore be measured not only by how much automation it adopts, but by how many people it empowers to do more.
